U\u00e7makdere is an old Greek village<\/strong>, established at the foothills of the Ganos Mountains, 35 km from Tekirda\u011f city center<\/strong>. Its Greek name, “Avdimio,”<\/strong> means “Pleasant Place.”<\/strong> While the Greeks living here during the Ottoman period used this name, the Turkish Y\u00f6r\u00fcks living in the same region called it “Avdin.”<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The name “U\u00e7makdere”<\/strong> used today originates from Old Turkish<\/strong>. “U\u00e7mak” means paradise<\/strong> in Turkish mythology. According to a photograph from 1918, the village had nearly 500 households<\/strong>, 2 churches, 3 holy springs (ayazma), 2 Greek cemeteries, and 3 pharmacies.
